Water Heater Safety Basics

Temperature settings, relief valves and carbon monoxide.

  • Temperature: The DOE suggests 120°F for most households to reduce scalding risk and save energy.
  • T&P valve: This valve releases pressure if the tank overheats. It should have a discharge pipe running to within a few inches of the floor or to a drain. Never cap or plug it.
  • Combustion air and venting: Gas heaters need air and an intact vent. Scorch marks at the burner or vent, or a pilot that keeps going out, warrant a service call.
  • Carbon monoxide: Install CO alarms near sleeping areas in any home with gas appliances.
  • Storage: Keep flammable products like gasoline and paint away from gas water heaters.
